Chapter Fifteen
Metcalf was ruining my life.
Iâd expected things to get worse ever since the rooftop incident. But this was a misery I hadnât anticipated.
Cars crawled through the busy intersection, their occupants glowering at me like this was my idea of a good time. The older vehicles spewed hot, noxious fumes as they grumbled past, and even the newer models added to the already unpleasant heat trap of asphalt baking under the desert sun.
Sweat made my hair cling needily to the back of my neck, and more of it was trickling down my spine. I was wearing an LVMPD-issued hat and sunglasses, but neither helped overly much.
The task force commanderâs bright idea to capture Metcalf?
Traffic duty.
His logic was sound enoughâbased on the information he had. My normal duties were too unpredictable for the good guys to anticipate and too easy for Metcalf to manipulate. If I was going to play bait, Commander Juárez needed me in a role where Iâd stay in the same place for long hours. That way the task force could have an anti-magic field set up and ready to activate, a perimeter watch in position before my arrival, and a huge team of hand-selected law enforcement personnel and attack drones ready to rush in at a momentâs notice.
Hence, traffic duty.
I mightâve felt less bitter about it if I hadnât known Metcalf wouldnât come for me. Hadnât known heâd already made his move and wasnât even playing on the same game board anymore.
But seriously, couldnât Juárez have come up with a post that included air-conditioning? If I was going to be dangled as bait, it wouldâve been nice to be climate-controlled bait.
Down here between the rows upon rows of buildings, there were none of the cooling breezes I enjoyed on Aurelisâs back. And speaking of my partner, she was standing on the sidewalk âsupervisingâ because her majestic size in the middle of the intersection only added to the traffic congestion.
The truth of that did not mitigate my feelings of peevish resentment.
At least Strike was hovering next to me in solidarity. Hopefully spending all day in the full sun wouldnât overheat her circuits. On the downside, that meant she was close enough to ask questions.
Whose idea had it been to equip drivers with car horns? Didnât the human race have more advanced methods of communicating? Did I know my skin was red and sticky-looking? Why was I performing a repetitive task better suited to a machine? Why did I choose to do so many things that made me unhappy? Why was I glaring at her like that?
I flipped the sign around and made the hand gestures for anyone the sign was too subtle for. Then I squirted some of the lukewarm water from my drink bottle into my mouth.
Word was that I shouldnât expect this set of traffic lights to be repaired for at least several days.
Strike asked me another question.
I let out a heavy sigh and wondered what her protocols said about protecting herself from me.
